Founded in 1886, Westinghouse Electric Company began as Westinghouse Electric Company founded by George Westinghouse. It pioneered AC power systems, won the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair contract, and built the first major hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls by 1896—helping establish long-distance power transmission standards.,Over the decades, Westinghouse expanded into steam turbines, appliances, commercial nuclear reactors (starting with Shippingport in 1957), and broadcasting (launching KDKA, the first U.S. radio station, in 1920). The original company transformed in the 1990s into CBS Corporation after divesting its industrial businesses. Today's Westinghouse Electric Company, formed in 1999, focuses on nuclear energy services globally, supplying reactor design, fuel, components, and plant services—with ownership divided between Brookfield Renewable Partners (51%) and Cameco (49%) as of late.
